Working alongside his mother Giovanna who tends the vineyards, Maurizio Anselma is in charge of the winemaking. The style goes against the current trend in Barolo which favours elegant, silky tannins. Instead, Anselma’s wines are a bit of a throwback in time as they are rather relentlessly tannic and almost impenetrable in their youth. Nevertheless, the 2016 Lazzarito possesses captivating elements of iron and damp undergrowth with forest and mineral accents repeating on the palate. There is sufficient coating of dense, concentrated fruit to match the massive structure, though it is still rigid, angular and a touch bitter at this stage.
