A panoramic Barolo, ‘Undicicomuni’ incorporates fruit from all 11 villages. An upfront nose delivers strawberry compote and baked rhubarb with minty, herb blossom accents. The palate expands with a charge of red berries, prune, smoke and spice. Sandy tannins are pixelated across the mouth; lightly dusty and dry but enfolded in the fruit, leading to a good length of bitter alpine herbs. Note that the estate decided not to release the full gamut of its MGA bottlings, but of those they did, Rocche di Castiglione gets my vote.
