The estate’s flagship since 1974, Vigna Merenda comes from selected plots within the Sarmassa subdistrict. Mineral-driven and savoury, it bears a distinct family resemblance to Scarzello’s village bottling, amping up the density and richness of red fruit with an almost compote-like character. Tart cranberry counters, while tar, wet leaves and smoke waft in the background. The tannins are youthfully intense though not hard, and this should all meld with a few more months in bottle. Quite a singular Barolo.
