Gaja’s former winemaker, Guido Rivella, started crafting his own wine in 2010 with just 0.4ha on the hallowed slope of Montestefano. Despite modest growth, this remains the estate’s flagship. Simmering in its complexities, the 2022 is not completely immediate. Nevertheless, enticing scents of wild woodland berries, mushroom, leather and forest floor are irresistible. Generously weighted with a measured richness, hints of wood spice and mocha tinge the dark fruit core. The tannins are compact and sturdy yet very finessed. A pleasantly bitter finish of alpine herbs stimulates the appetite for slow-braised game meat.
