US ex-pat Alan Manley has worked for - and learned from - some of Barolo’s finest including Luciano Sandrone, Elio Altare and Maria-Teresa Mascarello. His own label, Margherita Otto was officially launched with the 2015 vintage. He favours co-ferments from multiple parcels, long macerations and lengthy ageing in large neutral casks. The 2016 is ripe and rather generous, with a core of sweet cherry and blackberry hemmed in by sturdy, enveloping tannins. Dark soil, smoke and rust nuances add to its appeal.
