For those looking for something completely different, Quila is an experimental, one might even say eccentric estate making a fascinatingly curious array of wines. While owner Bisso Atanassov abandoned the idea to bottle his 2022 Barbaresco under screwcap, he took the leap in 2023 – it is the first in the denomination. It comes across as a bit reduced and wood-led to begin. As it sits in the glass, intense balsamic notes of grilled sage and rosemary pervade. Lurking beneath are raspberry and mint blossom. Masses of dry, grainy tannins wash over the palate. This is not for the faint of heart or classicists, but I can’t help but be curious about where this wine and the estate will go.
