Roberto Voerzio established his eponymous estate in 1986 planting vineyards at very high densities: up to 10,000 vines per hectare. He crops these painfully low, as little as 0.5 kilos per plant for his cru bottlings. While today he uses a combination of new and used barriques with larger casks, in 1996, the wine was aged exclusively in small French oak barrels. The colour is still deep and rather youthful though the nose is showing its age with mature notes of beef stock and tar dominating liquorice and prune plum. Massively concentrated and tight with chocolateqy, sweet oak tannins very much at the fore. I admire the depth this offers, however, I find the expression of place and Nebbiolo's subtleties obscured.
