The Marzemino grape is planted throughout northern Italy, where it's often used in blends. Its main claim to fame is a mention in the opera Don Giovanni – just before his deliverance to hell, Don Giovanni calls out for a glass of Marzemino: 'Versa il vino! Eccellente Marzemino!' More heavenly than hellish, this has appealing aromas of black cherry on the nose, with more smooth and silky cherry fruit on the palate. Velvety tannins, but also freshness and texture. Try it slightly chilled with a creamy risotto.
