From a northwest-facing parcel on the Montosoli hill, Vigna Cerbaia represents the estate’s oldest vines – almost 40 years old – and, at 400 metres, its highest site. It strikes me as considerably riper and more concentrated than the ‘regular’ 2015 Brunello, though with plenty of flavour. The nose offers cherry and prune with some sweet spice and chocolatey notes. Robust and chewy, it manages to find its footing before becoming too heavy. The tannins are a bit drying as they clamp down on the finish, which lingers with saffron and fennel.
