A fully garnet hue heralds an earthy mushroom and warm cocoa bouquet. The palate is characterised by a salty-sweet character as prune, tobacco and beef bouillon melt into soft, chocolatey tannins. Overshadowed by adjacent vintages, 1998 may have passed its optimal peak, but it is not without mature appeal. Just 60% new barriques. Drink up.
