Despite his small stature, Domingos Alves de Sousa is a Douro Valley wine giant, whose son Tiago is following in his footsteps. This wine took its name from an abandoned vineyard which was about to be grubbed up and replanted because its 80 year old vines - at 500m on steep, rocky schist slopes - produced so little fruit. The family decided to bottle a single vineyard wine from it in 2004 as a farewell gesture, and the resulting quality was so good they knew the plot had to be preserved. It has delicious purity of bramble, anise and sour cherry, with black pepper and integrated spicy wood tones. It spends 19 months in new French oak, but its powerful structure is perfectly balanced by the concentrated fruit and lively acidity, which leads onto an elegant, mineral finish.
