Miles Mossop, winemaker at Tokara until 2018, founded his own label with his wife Samantha in 2004. He has made this wine, named after his son, from the start. Max 2020 is based on 56% Cabernet Sauvignon with 23% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc in support. Fruit was sourced from low-yielding vineyards in the Bottelary, Polkadraai and Banghoek wards of Stellenbosch, and the wine aged for 21 months in 22% new French oak barriques, bottled without fining or filtering. Jason Millar: Classic Stellenbosch nose, with black fruits, a hint of warm herbs and oregano, integrated and flattering French oak and nice, rounded tannins. Long and comforting, but also impressive and delicious. Roger Jones: Spiced, with layers of texture and evolved fruit. Savoury notes and fruit in good balance. Opens up in the glass, giving a lovely depth that will surely carry it for a decade or so. Victoria Mason MW: Earthy and herbal with green pepper, blackcurrant, notes of petrichor and liquorice. Vivid and crunchy; I like the green edge, which brings freshness.
