This has a copper note to the colour and a distinctly oxidative nose, but I'm assured by winemaker Eben Sadie that the bottle is not out of condition. Full-bodied, rich, powerful and quite high alcohol, with apple skin texture and tannins. There's power and pleasure here still but the wine has passed its peak drinking window, so if you have this in your cellar, drink up. Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Viognier, Chardonnay, Roussanne, Semillon, Palomino and some lesser grapes grown on granite and gravel soils. Grapes were pressed in a basket press, with juice run off into barrel without settling, and some of the Viognier and Chenin Blanc was fermented on skins for up to four days. It saw 18 months' ageing on lees in clay amphora, old French oak vats and 600L concrete eggs.
