Papaya and guava to the fore with plentiful cashew oak notes. The oak is beautifully integrated but still quite noticeable, alongside a spark of matchstick. A full-bodied, lush, powerful, gourmand style of white: bold, rich, round and opulent, with a long, creamy vanilla finish and slightly low (though just balancing) acidity. Sumptuous, if looking perhaps a little old-fashioned now in its ripeness and oak compared to current vintages of some top South African white blends. 45% Chenin Blanc, 20% Grenache Blanc, 15% Clairette, 10% Viognier, 10% Chardonnay grown on granite and gravel soils. Grapes were pressed in a basket press, with juice run off into barrel without settling, and some of the Viognier and Chenin Blanc was fermented on skins for up to four days. It spent 12 months' ageing on lees in 500L and 600L French oak barrels and 600L concrete eggs, then a further six months on the fine lees.
