Leeu Passant was founded in 2013 with the aim of reinterpreting the old Cape red blends of the mid-20th century, which often included a significant proportion of Cinsault. In this vintage, Cinsault accounts for 16% of the blend, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from Stellenbosch making up the balance. The wine was aged for 11 months in 500-litre French oak barrels, one third new, followed by a further 11 months in seasoned 2,000-litre foudres. Jason Millar: Oregano and blackcurrant leaf segue into crisp, just-ripe black fruits on the palate. Lively and detailed with nice definition. Lovely nuance and control. Roger Jones: Savoury and fruit-driven, with good balance. Layered, fresh and appealing. Pretty seamless and focused: love the purity and essence of this. Victoria Mason MW: Dark and spicy. Black fruit, woodsmoke, tobacco leaf and black pepper. Beguiling fragrance! Mouthwatering. Great drive from the start, real energy.
