Located in Laguardia, Bodegas Palacio dates back to 1894. This is one of those wonderful old Riojas where you get sweetly soft tannins, like they've been caressed and gently laid out for you. These are joined by flavours of leather, cocoa dusting and silky smooth strawberry fruits from age-softened Tempranillo. It has amazing balance too. Decant just before drinking, or not at all, but be careful of the heavy deposits. Tasted at home in Bordeaux with homemade shepherd's pie from The Ivy cookbook: perfect!
