At 55 years old, there is discernible fruit here, although it’s crushed and gentle at this point. Soft raspberry notes, truffled complexity, earth notes with a saline finish, giving delicacy and complexity. This was an extremely impressive vintage at the time, as evidenced by alcohol levels that were only achieved in extremely rare ripe years at the time (Rioja overall was making around one fifth of the wine that it does today). Two years open vat fermentation, then six years in American oak barrels then three years in bottle. 2% Graciano completes the blend (which is notable for being very different from a typical Rioja blend today). First time that this has been tasted outside of the winery in the past 20 years, and there are perhaps only 200 bottles left in total. We were also tasting it at the end of this masterclass, so the wine had been open and in the glass for 1.5 hours, and yet still survived - extremely impressive.
