Drunk during the en primeur week in Bordeaux, this is a reminder of how beautifully this particular Rioja can age, giving a host of the world's most iconic names a run for their money. Gentle aromatics of smoke-dusted crushed strawberries and rose petals softly tiptoe through the palate, unwilling to disturb it, and yet still with a power that steals up on you. The lasting impression is of rich redcurrants and black truffles. I was lucky enough to taste other vintages of this wine at an amazing Marques de Riscal masterclass, hosted by Andrew Caillard MW at Decanter's Fine Wine Encounter in Shanghai in November.
