Rioja cooperative Bodegas San Esteban was founded in 1953; its 350 members have over 500ha of vines. Aged for 14 months in new French oak and a further year in bottle before release, this 2012 vintage is drinking nicely now, still with some primary black berry fruit. Mellow, with ripe autumnal notes, well-balanced tannins and harmonious oak, leading to a gently lingering finish. Damsons, plums, blackberries and sweet cedar on the nose.
