Merlot may not be the first grape variety you’d associate with this corner of southeast Spain, but it works in a wine that offers lashings of ripe, plummy fruit with a cocoa sweetness and gentle tannins. It finishes with a touch of confectionery sweetness, but shows good intensity at this price.
