Valdigué has a complicated history. Originally from southwest France, it nearly disappeared there due to "high-yielding, bad quality," then arrived in the US under the alias of Napa Gamay that nobody questioned for decades. Under 1,000 acres remain in California today, but it's having a moment, with growers treating it well and producers exploring what it can actually do. Birdhorse is sourcing grapes from organically-farmed, 40-year-old-vines in the Back Road Vineyard at the north end of Suisun Valley, just southeast of Napa, at the base of the Vaca Mountain Range. The 2023 is a 'super drinkable and chillable red', with aromas of eucalyptus, wild berries, a hint of minerality, and a peppery touch that follows through on the palate. The wine sees about 50% whole cluster and 10 months on the lees in neutral barrels, which is why it has a lovely texture, dusty, soft tannins, and a fresh, lifted finish.
