Black fruit aromas mingle with red and purple florals. Full-bodied with a powerful drive and not overly extracted. A plethora of raspberry, black cherry, and blackberry fruit peppered with dried herbs. Quite Intense and grippy tannins coupled with tart acidity on the mid-palate build on a long cedarwood finish, and not entirely in unison, giving the impression of being a bit disjointed, but should soften with time and find balance. Right now, it’s all wound up. Clos Abeille is an estate-owned vineyard that sits below Bond’s Quella site, also with decomposed granite soils. Grapes from here have been used in blending. Still, winemaker Meghan Zorbeck and Lawrence Wine Estates CEO Carlton McCoy MS, and the winemaking team built a one-tenth-hectare pollinator garden with a bee sanctuary (hence, the Clos Abeille, ‘of bees’) and the ecosystem changed after that. They decided to bottle these grapes and revel in the wine’s energy, tension, and extreme tannin profile.
