The 2009 Hillside Select is bursting with ripe cassis, along with notes of spring flowers and liquorice. There is an almost confected sweetness to the fruit. On the palate the wine reveals a densely extracted, thick texture that packs an appreciable alcoholic punch. Like most of Shafer's Hillside Selects from the new millennium, this is a wine to enjoy for its youthful precocity rather than looking too far to the long-term.
