Dialled back to 25% whole cluster (less than half of past vintages) and 25% new oak, made in puncheon, this Syrah, cofermented with 7% Viognier, is a very pretty bottling from the 2023 vintage. This wine is sourced from the older parts of the SJR vineyard—blocks 1 and 3 (a Joseph Phelps clone Syrah) and block 7 (the Entav 470 clone). Aromatics show a core of purple violets, smoke and struck iron. The minerality frames a purity of fruits and a wonderful showcase of the briny, Rocks terroir. Bramble berries and raspberries, with a smoky blood orange kiss, lift against the umami notes of soy and hoisin. In production, the Viognier, which is destemmed and roughly tossed into the middle of the Syrah, where it cold-soaks for over a week.
