Weather Conditions

A very dry year in the north, with heat spikes, and an early harvest. High temperatures in September caused problems such as high volatile acidity at wineries not equipped with temperature control. Similar hot conditions prevailed in the south, causing serious problems during fermentation.

Best Appellations

North: the best wines were very good indeed, rich and powerful, with good structure. The same was true of the whites, which were rich and high in alcohol. South: many wines turned out jammy and baked, and did not age particularly well. (Condrieu lacked acidity and developed fast.)

Best Producers

La Mouline and La Landonne from Guigal are the stars in Cote Rotie. Gerard Chave made superb Hermitage and Jaboulet’s La Chapelle was also excellent.

In Chateauneuf Beaucastel produced surprisingly good wine despite the extreme heat.
