Tanners, Prosecco Brut, Treviso, Italy

90
With the demand for Prosecco sky-high, it’s never been more important to be choosy, as quality can vary hugely. This Tanners own-label, made by the Ceschin family, is a trusty buy. It’s zesty, showing a fruit-salad and floral nose and crunchy green apples on the lively palate. There’s a fine balance between sweetness and acidity.

Rafael Palacios, Louro do Bolo Godello, Valdeorras, Spain, 2013

Rafael has lived up to the Palacios wine name here, with a weighty, stone fruit-infused, gastronomic wine, enlivened by a refreshing herbal edge. A serious take on the Godello grape.

92

Both components of this sophisticated food wine were fermented using natural yeasts, the Sémillon in used French barrels (in which it was also aged before blending). There’s a subtle hint of spice from the oak, lending support to the breezy, herbal fruit and round leesy notes.

Winzerhof Thörle, Riesling Feinherb, Rheinhessen, Germany, 2013

92
Brothers Johannes and Christoph have been in charge of their family estate for almost a decade; it’s an organically run property with conversion to biodynamics on the horizon. This is a pristine, precise wine with great depth and razor-sharp acidity. Lovely, pure fruit including peach and apricot, and distinct minerality.

Jean-Paul Brun, Chardonnay Classic, Terres Dorées, Burgundy, France, 2013

95
Clean melon aromas with a mix of fresh green fruit and some tropical hints. The palate is more discreet, in a cleansing style. Long and focused with a zesty lift. This wine’s appeal is heightened by the fact that Beaujolais Blanc is new to many wine lovers. Abundant white flowers aromas, hints of melon and minerals; the taut, chalky palate has a taste of the soil. Quite serious, and worth every penny.

Eradus, Single-Vineyard Pinot Gris, Awatere Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand, 2013

90
Eradus was founded by Dutch couple Har and Sophie Eradus in the 1980s. The family’s opulently textured Pinot Gris would match an array of foods. Despite its pungency, the marked acidity keeps it fresh, and the palate – decorated with white peach – has a harmonious feel.

La Grande Nuit, Chardonnay, Pays d'Oc, France, 2013

88
Although the fruit in this complex, attractive wine is grown close to the Mediterranean coast, daytime temperatures can still hit significant levels. As a result the grapes are harvested at night, hence the wine’s name. It’s leesy but fresh, with a soft feel to the palate which has green apple notes and a herbal edge.

A bewitching beauty, this is one for dark and stormy nights. There’s no oak on show, but there are buckets of black cherry and blackberry fruit, complemented by a rich hint of olives. Despite the dark nature of the fruit, it’s fresh, hugely rewarding and reflective of its origin.
