A great introduction to the red wines of Georgia, this Saperavi is exclusive to Majestic, produced by the respected Tbilvino winery. A portion of the wine is aged in traditional qvevri, the large clay amphorae that are buried underground – a winemaking technique that has been used in Georgia for thousands of years – with some oak staves introduced during fermentation. Dark and inky in the glass, this is rich in forest fruit, mouthcoating, fresh, elegant and with lively acidity. Mix-six price: £11.50

The Tbilvino brand’s efforts to provide a beginner’s guide to Georgia (cf their excellent orange Qvevri Rkatsitelli) continues apace with this vivid expression of the country’s great red grape Saperavi, with intense, finger-stainingly inky dark blackberry juiciness, a subtle floral edge, and sinewy but soft tannins.
