Of course it's the region's whites that have put Friuli on the wine map, but it would be a shame to never sample Refosco, a red grape widely planted here, producing wines that are typically robust, high in acidity and full-bodied. Aged for six months in second-use barrels and barriques, this example has rusticity and a tannic structure, but is also bright with berry fruit – think Barbera or Beaujolais. It would be perfect with a bread and cheese picnic.
