Porcupine Ridge is the good-value supermarket brand made by the famous estate Boekenhoutskloof. Its (more expensive) Syrah is among the best in South Africa. Here we have Cabernet Sauvignon, with 5% Cabernet Franc added to give a more heightened fragrance and flavour profile. Aged in French oak for nine months, this uncomplicated red has no pretensions to grandeur but offers fresh, slightly stalky, dark currant and plum fruits and a hint of mocha. Slightly warm on the finish, but an easy drinking New World Cabernet that would go down well at a party or barbecue.
