History:

Château Couhins was once a large and prestigious estate owned by the Hanappier and Gasqueton families: it was Edouard Gasqueton who was in charge when the white wine was promoted to cru classé in 1959. Since 1968, it has been managed by the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) who run the estate on a strictly scientific basis. It is precision wine-growing – parameters like vine vigour are mapped and the management of the vineyard modified accordingly. The word Couhins is said to come from the old Gascon word which means ‘borders’ or ‘limits’. Certainly, the estate lies close to the city of Bordeaux.
