Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is to make red wine in the Corton appellation for the first time.

Co-owned by Aubert de Villaine and Henri-Frédéric Roch, the Vosne-Romanée based domaine has leased about 2.3 hectares (six acres) in the Corton appellation from Domaine Florent Prince de Mérode.

DRC plans to make three Grands Crus – a Corton-Bressandes, a Corton-Clos-du-Roi and a Corton-Renardes.

Didier Dubois, winemaker for Prince Florent de Mérode – who currently tends the Corton vines – will make the new wines under the direction of DRC vineyard manager Nicholas Jacob.

The first of the DRC Corton will be released in 2012, in minute quantities. In addition to its iconic red wine, DRC also produces a Montrachet.
