Nicolas Feuillatte, Blanc de Blancs, Champagne, France, 2008

Deliciously floral and rounded, this has precision and finesse, readier than most 2008s. It is a crowd pleaser, an unassuming yet very approachable expression of the vintage and village alike.

Gremillet, Brut, Champagne, France, 2009

Small bubbles shimmering up the glass; the texture is velvet and the nose is showing opulent vanilla tones. The palate is restrained, but it is a precise expression on the dominant Pinot Noir.

Bonnaire, Blanc de Blancs, Grand Cru, Champagne, France, 2009

Richer and oxidative in style, this is showing ripe orchard fruit alongside mushroom notes and a chalky minerality with signs of maturity.

Tesco, Finest, Penedès, Spain, 2014

Franciacorta is gaining more and more recognition as a region producing serious fizz. This example, produced by Castel Faglia for Tesco, has a doughy, brioche and lemon nose. The mousse has a soft texture, and is followed by a green apple character that develops some cream and nuttiness on the finish. Delightful!

Weiber, Brut, Crémant d’Alsace, Alsace, France

A great-value fizz. Perfect for a summer garden party, and an alternative to the usual default choice of Prosecco or Cava. Soft, green apple aromas and floral, English garden scents too. It's dry and full-flavoured on the palate, with ripe, crunchy green apple and a lick of lemon sherbert to keep it refreshing.

Asda, Shield, Prosecco, Veneto, Italy

Prosecco has a confusing arrangement where Extra Dry is sweeter than Brut, but drier than Dry. So this sits in the middle of the spectrum, and has plenty of pear and apple character, with a noticeable sweetness that is somewhat counteracted by acidity and fizz. It's basic, but it's got a fresh taste and is easy to drink.

Aldi, Ca'di Pietra (Magnum), Prosecco, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy

This basic Prosecco, in magnum format, may be all you need for winter fizz. It has a touch of residual sugar sweetness and weight to it, with flavours of baked apple and pear. Fairly simple, but excellent value and good fun in this bottle size.
