Fantastic value on show here, and another triumph in Tesco's own-label Finest range. Priced at just £7, this Abruzzo red is made from the Montepulciano grape (Italy's second most widely planted red after Sangiovese). It's a perfect Italian red for midweek drinking – it's crafted in a commercial style, for sure, but it has lovely 'Italian' character. Fermented in steel and then aged on fine lees for 18-24 months, it's medium-bodied, fresh and juicy, with fleshy plum and sour cherry fruit, and some earthiness. Get those pizzas in the oven and crack open a bottle.
