Austria's flagship grape, Grüner Veltliner, offers wine drinkers something unique. Grown most successfully on steep vineyards overlooking the Danube, it can reach world-class standards of quality but also offers easy-drinking value at the other end of the scale...

Austrian Grüner Veltliner to try:

Rainer Wess, Grüner Veltliner, Wachau, Austria, Austria, 2014

My wines

Schooled in Austria, Wess cut his teeth at assorted properties in Bordeaux before returning to his homeland and establishing his eponymous operation in 2003. This is aromatic, graceful and vivid Grüner showing lovely tension, dried herbs and an abundance of citrus fruit.

Bründlmayer, Ried Berg Vogelsang Grüner Veltliner, Kamptal, Niederösterreich, Austria, 2016

Top Kamptal producer, Bründlmeyer, crafts this early drinking Grüner from the slopes of the Loiser mountain where the soil contains a variety of mica schist called 'Gföhler Gneis'. Vogelsgang ('Birdsong Hill') shows the classic pepper notes of Grüner with hints of star-anise and clove, finishing with a cool, vibrant palate.

Weingut Stadt Krems, Reserve Stein Grüner Veltliner, Kremstal, Niederösterreich, Austria, 2013

My wines

91

Weingut Stadt Krems is one of the oldest wine producers in Austria. This 30ha estate is on the best terroir of the city of Krems. Very dense nose of white peach and lime and a pure, full-bodied palate supported by a direct acidity, leading to a delicate finish. This is a great food wine.

Juicy stone fruits, honey and floral nose. Vibrant palate, very good density and ripe fruit concentration; there is plenty of spice and nice grapefruit peel bitterness, with a long finish.

Developed aromas of bruised apple, apricot and melon candy, it has a lush, full-bodied palate with good concentration and weight of fruit. Layered and dense with grip and some spice on the lengthy finish.
