34 festive wines to buy and drink this Christmas

AR Lenoble, Intense Mag 15, Champagne, France

My wines

91

AR Lenoble stores most of its reserve wines in barrels and casks, but some are now kept in magnums under cork, which gives greater protection from oxidation. Mag 15 is a blend of 45% of these reserve wines with base wines from 2015. It has a saline nose with bright lemon and apple. It’s super-fresh, with razor-sharp saline acidity, green apple and richer hints of nougat and dough on the long finish

Masottina, Organic Prosecco Brut, Prosecco, Veneto, Italy

My wines

90

A great food-friendly wine, produced organically in a drier brut style. It has delicate floral aromas with white peach, crisp apple and pear. On the palate it’s full of fine bubbles with a sherbet and pear drop-like taste, nicely balanced by racy acidity. A great aperitif for your celebrations.

Selborne, Classic Cuvée Brut NV, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom

My wines

90

New to Majestic this year, this blend of half Chardonnay with Pinot Noir and a touch of Meunier is made from Hampshire vineyards by one of English wine's top names. It's a celebration of the English countryside in the glass, with a lovely core of mellow red apple and pear fruit and a brioche richness. Named for the small Hampshire village that was studied in the 1700s by Gilbert White, regarded by many as England's first ecologist.

Contevedo, Organic Cava, Cava, Catalonia, Spain

My wines

89

If you like your fizz dry, then Cava is always a great option at this price point (Prosecco is usually a little sweeter). This organic 100% Macabeo is fresh with ripe peach fruit. The same producer’s Brut, priced at £5.29, isn’t as tasty, but the gold bottle is very festive (if a little gaudy).

Elephant Hill, Element Series Sea Sauvignon Blanc, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, 2016

My wines

93

The Element Series is a limited-edition, terroir-focused wine range to showcase fruit from a specific site – here the shingle soils of the coastal Te Awanga vineyard. Half the grapes were fermented in 500L puncheons and the wine spent 16 months on lees, giving creamy complexity and spice to the grassy, saline, tropical fruit palate. Elegantly structured.

My wines

92

Sourced from vines aged between 10 and 40 years, this has a lovely bright, tight, minerally palate showcasing soft melon notes alongside zippier grapefruit and citrus. Wild herbs and a stoniness peek through, while the whole thing is driven by the acidity. Beautiful!

Morrisons, The Best Petit Chablis, Chablis, Burgundy, France, 2017

My wines

91

The 2013 vintage of Morrisons, The Best Chablis 1er Cru won Platinum (97 points) at this year's Decanter World Wine Awards, and the current 2015 vintage at £15 is another brilliant buy. Also made by the excellent La Chablisienne co-op is this Petit Chablis which is top value, the welcome addition of a screwcap ensuring all that lovely freshness and fruit purity is retained. Concentrated, mineral and weighty with a lingering nutty finish and packed with yellow apple fruit and citrus acidity.

Royal Tokaji, Dry Tokaji, Tokaj, Hungary, 2015

My wines

91

A Majestic exclusive, this is made mainly from the Furmint grape, which is famous for producing Tokaj's stunning dessert wines. Dry Tokaji is a great style to pair with mild Asian dishes - this one has gorgeous fleshy stone fruit aromas, a structure that makes it supremely food-friendly and a good length. Quite a showy wine, but in perfect balance.

Avantis Estate, Dolphins, Santorini, Aegean Islands, Greece, 2018

My wines

Avantis set up a Santorini outpost in 2012. This Assyrtiko certainly reflects its maritime origins, with a delicious seam of saline acidity contrasting with its subtle woody frame. Delicious stone fruits retain some savoury elegance and lead to a delightful grapefruit twist on the finish.

Stepp, Kallstadter Saumagen S Riesling, Pfalz, Germany, 2018

My wines

90

This wine comes from the vineyard of Saumagen in the village of Kallstadt. It's wild-yeast fermented then aged on its lees for six months. Flinty and mineral on the nose, it has plenty of stone fruits, sweet pears and white flower aromas. It's bone-dry (2g/l of sugar) on the palate with lifted apple and pear blossom notes leading to a clean, fresh finish.

Clarendelle, Rosé, Bordeaux, France, 2018

My wines

A delicate, elegant blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with an unusually pale colour. Ripe strawberry and raspberry aromas with a light spritz of tangy fruit on the palate. There’s a mineral element too with some salinity, but this is a rich, well-concentrated wine with structure.

Il Poggione, Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy, 2012

My wines

94

With an intoxicating perfume of rose petals, wet earth and forest floor jumping out of the glass, you know this is a classy and charming Brunello. The palate is intense and long-lasting, unfolding layers of sour red cherry, hawthorn, potpourri and sweet spice. The fine-grained tannins are masculine and well-structured. Aged in French oak barrels for four years, it is already a fine treat but can still evolve further in bottle.

The latest international venture for the northern Rhône’s Graillot family sees Antoine Graillot join Spain’s Raúl Pérez to craft this meaty, pure-fruited Mencía. Wild fennel joins tart plums and cherries on an inky, earthy palate. Elegantly rustic, with sappy tannins and savoury acidity.

Pisano, Cisplatino Tannat, Progreso, Canelones, Uruguay, 2017

My wines

92

A cracking wine for the price from the Pisano family, showcasing what is often a mouth-puckeringly tannic and high-octane variety in an elegant guise. The six months in neutral French oak barrels has imparted sweet spice to the weighty, smoky wild blue and black berry fruits, supported by grippy fruit tannins and juicy acidity.

Rustenberg, RM Nicholson, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2016

My wines

92

In 2016, Rustenberg lost 5ha of vineyard to fires on Simonsberg mountain. But out of the devastation came a delicious vintage of RM Nicholson, benefitting from the reduced yields and thus increased concentration and opulence. A blend of Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet, it has a stalky hedgerow fruit aroma, minty-fresh with inky, violet-tinged black and blue fruit flavours. It has fine tannins, lip-smacking acidity and an oak-dominated finish of chocolate, black pepper, cream and liquorice.

From star Spanish winemaker Telmo Rodriguez and friend Pablo Eguzkiza comes this sappy, juicy bush-vine Tempranillo, fermented in concrete vats then aged in French oak barrels for 14 months. It's concentrated, mellow and spicy with savoury wild strawberry fruit. The Contino 2015 for £25 is also delicious if you want to trade up.

Tesco, Finest Angelica Sur Malbec, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina, 2016

My wines

91

The high altitude Uco Valley is widely recognised as producing some of Argentina's best Malbecs, and although this example - from Argentine wine pioneer Catena - is more than twice as much as the Tesco Finest Western Cape Malbec, I'd highly recommend making the upgrade. It's a world apart: juicy, fleshy dark fruit is accompanied by refreshing minty hints, with some violet highlights and well-integrated chocolatey oak.

Bosman's wines have gone from strength to strength since head winemaker Corlea Fourie joined the team in 2007 – she also makes the 2019 Taste the Difference Fairtrade Chenin Blanc (£8). This is a blend of 77% Cabernet and 23% Malbec from vines on ancient schist soils is all fruit: youthful, juicy red and black berries, fresh green herbs and a wonderful seam of smoky, minerality. Big boned yet vibrant and should age very well.

Waitrose, In Partnership with Piccini No.1 Riserva, Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy, 2014

My wines

89

Grapes for this were sourced from Castelnuovo di Berardenga in the southern part of the Chianti Classico area. Well-known flying winemaker Riccardo Cotarella consults on the winemaking, which sees the wine aged for 10 months in oak, six in barrique and four in bottle. There's a lovely aromatic quality to this, with ample dark cherry fruit and rosemary notes along with some attractive leathery evolution. It would make an elegant match for roast lamb.

Les Vignerons de Maury, Solera 1928 Cask No 849, Maury, Languedoc-Roussillon, France

My wines

93

Such a delicious treat for Christmas! The dynamic Maury cooperative makes this fortified Grenache using a solera system started way back in 1928 and releases wines from individually numbered casks - Berry's buyer Fiona Hayes selected 849. The fresh nose has enticing aromas of fruit cake, baked apple and figs. The luscious figgy palate has complex dried fruit and nut notes, but also incredible freshness, with red apple bite. Like a fine old Madeira and tremendous value for money. Bring on the cheese board!

2015 was an excellent vintage in Sauternes, as it was across the Bordeaux region. Swirl this golden liquid in the glass and breathe in aromas of apricot, orange and baked fruits. There's a luscious honeyed texture, and a good structure from the 18 months in French oak. Fresh and elegant, despite the 127g/l of residual sugar.

Lustau, Península Palo Cortado, Jerez, Spain

My wines

A fabulous Sherry at an incredible price! Palo Cortado combines the best qualities of amontillado (dry, delicate, walnut skins, hints of flor) and oloroso (caramelly, rich, dried figs, more oxidised) in an intense, complex whole. This is beautifully concentrated with nutty, spiced fruitcake density and a long milk chocolate finish. Stock up for Christmas and serve slightly chilled as an aperitif or with cheese.
