One of the first estate wineries in high-altitude Gualtallary, Zorzal has been instrumental in putting this increasingly renowned wine region on the map. This comes from a plot with a particularly high proportion of calcareous material in the soil. Vinified with native yeasts in concrete tanks and 20% whole bunches, the wine is further aged in concrete, embodying Zorzal’s largely unoaked approach to premium wines. Amanda Barnes: A smoky, mineral character runs as an undertone to black pepper and oak spice. On the palate the floral character comes through, while supple tannins keep the finish elegant. Vincenzo Arnese: Flavours of dark chocolate, coffee and tobacco with a good texture and ripe tannins. Has a nice, vibrant palate with good body and a long finish. Ben Gubbins: Alluring peppery nose with graphite, tobacco, cedar, violets and blue fruits following on the palate. Lively, if a hint of warmth, with a peppery finish.
