‘An enjoyable year for often overlooked villages’
The 2018 Côte de Beaune vintage saw higher yields than in the Côte de Nuits and the reds are more consistent as a result.
The top wines aren’t quite at the same level as those from the best grands and premiers crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée, but there’s a brightness and freshness to many reds that is very welcome in 2018.

The Côte de Beaune also benefited from summer rain in July and August, which helped the vines to maintain a degree of balance.
Corton – a grand cru that was almost made for hot vintages, thanks to its marked acidity and firm tannins – plus Beaune, Volnay and Pommard have all made a number of excellent wines.
This is also an enjoyable year for often overlooked villages such as Savigny-lès-Beaune, Monthélie and Santenay.
And, just as there was in 2017, there’s plenty of wine in the cellars, which is a relief after the catastrophic run of vintages in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

The majority of Burgundy’s leading white wines were produced in the Côte de Beaune, as they often are, with Meursault, Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet all performing well and cooler sites in Ladoix, St-Romain, St-Aubin and Santenay coming into their own.

Once again, generous yields preserved a degree of zip in a year when malic acid was in short supply in the grapes. Some producers added tartaric acid, some blocked (or partially blocked) malolactic fermentations and most of the best domaines picked early, starting with Arnaud Ente on 19 August. Vignerons increasingly take their holidays in July these days.
This is not a brilliant vintage for white wines – 2014 and 2017 are both superior – but thanks to the quantities produced, 2018 is good to very good.
As a producer in Chassagne-Montrachet told me, ‘With a tiny crop, we’d have made syrup. Nature came to our rescue for once.’
