Steininger, Grand Grü Grüner Veltliner Reserve 2015
Steininger are clearly quite self-assured about the quality of this wine, the name Grand Grü being a cheeky pun combining Grand Cru and Grüner Veltliner. Having tasted it, you can understand their confidence. It has spent ten months in old oak to allow the components to integrate and gain some texture. A nose of cooking apple leads into an intense, slightly savoury apricot, apple and lime palate. It is very hard and steely with a mineral, saline edge. Long and complex, the richness comes in at the end with a honeyed character countered by pure, glacial acidity.
