The first ever itinerant worldwide Tempranillo competition is to be held this February in Copenhagen.

A self-styled showcase for the main grape of Rioja, the Tempranillos al Mundo competition is inviting Tempranillo producers around the world to submit their wines. The tasting will take place in Copenhagen’s Sofitel over the weekend of 5 February.

Prospective entrants are given a list of valid Tempranillo synonyms which include Arganda, Cencibel, Chincillano, Escobera, Garnacho de Logroño, Jacibera, Tinto Roriz, and Valdepeñas.

The tastings will assess rosé, red and fortified Tempranillo wines with each of the three categories further sub-divided into percentage of the grape used, vintage year and whether the wine was aged in wood.

The wines entered are subject to certain constraints including a minimum production of 1,000 bottles and EU or international-compliant labelling.

The wines will be judged on a 100-point scale with three awards up for grabs: Great Golden Tempranillo (96-100 pts), Golden Tempranillo (95-88 pts) and Silver Tempranillo (87-83 pts).
