Greek whites breaking new ground
Tesco Finest Greek Assrytiko
As if to put the seal on Greece’s arrival in the British wine-drinking mainstream, this is the first Greek wine to make it into the Tesco Finest range. Happily, it’s a worthy addition: a pristine hit of zesty, pithy lemon with a whistle-clean dry finish that is perfect for white fish.
Tesco Malagouzia
The second of two exciting Greek white additions to the Tesco range, this luxurious take on Malagouzia ripples with fresh fleshy white peachy fruit, lemon balm and honeysuckle, and courses with fresh acidity and grapefruity citrus on the long finish.
Crisp and Aromatic Whites
Clare Valley Riesling
From one of the masters of this true-Aussie-original style of Riesling, and with fruit mainly sourced in the highly regarded Polish Hill district of the Clare Valley, this is just fantastic value for money: a scintillating maximally tangy hit of the freshest, ripest lime skin and juice.
Austrian-style Grüner Veltliner (Nepenthe)
There aren’t all that many convincing versions of Austria’s signature white variety being made beyond its borders, but this is certainly one of the best we’ve tried so far: appealingly fruit-fleshy with melon and nectarine, but with focus and drive from a burst of citrus and leafy-herbal freshness.

Seifried Nelson Sauvignon Blanc
There’s wonderful clarity to this expression of Sauvignon Blanc from Nelson’s Seifried Estate, all the better to show off those classic flavours of elderflower and lime, in a pleasingly dry style that finishes in refreshingly citrussy fashion.
New Zealand Pinot Gris
A bright, varietally true take on a grape variety that is one of New Zealand wine’s trump cards: full of characteristic orchard fruitiness, summer-garden flowers and subtle spice. It’s nicely weighted and dry, and at its best with white meat.
Rhône Viognier
A delightfully graceful and great value take on the occasionally overwrought apricot-scented Viognier from one of the most reliable names in the modern Rhône: soft and downy easy peachiness with subtle honeysuckle and plenty of presence without losing focus or freshness.
Juicy and approachable reds
Nepenthe Pinot Noir
Like its Grüner Veltliner white companion from Nepenthe in the Tesco range, there’s far more to this wine than varietal novelty. Made in a lighter, modern bistro style, it’s all slick berry and cherry fruit, with cherry-skin tannins and a bright burst of acidity.
Perrin Ventoux Rhône blend
The prolific Perrin family’s version of the Southern Rhône blend in Ventoux is a gloriously vivid and compellingly drinkable blackberry-crumble-scented red: deeply dark-fruited with supple tannins and a robust but suave and fresh feel. Really good value.
Julie Rouffignac Grenache-led blend
Rhône winemaker Julie Rouffignac is the name behind a number of Tesco’s best buys, and this unoaked Grenache-led blend is most certainly among them: an unimpeded expression of spice and garrigue-inflected red fruit which combines concentration with energy and lift.
Crozes-Hermitage Syrah
A classic drinking-now, steak-frites-ready Crozes from this leading Northern Rhône house: pure Syrah offering a highly drinkable mix of sinewy-supple tannin, dark raspberry fruit and black pepper-seasoned meatiness.
Galician Mencía (CVNE)
From Rioja masters CVNE’s Galician outpost, this is Mencía in pure and juicy, pretty-fruited unoaked style: with a whoosh of sweet ripe red and black cherry and easy light tannins, it’s an easy-drinking Spanish answer to Beaujolais.
Portuguese red blend
This easy-going multi-local-varietal blend is an obvious candidate for midweek drinking: the price a fair reflection of its abundant plummy soft-hearted style which avoids being overly sweet, as so many cheaper Portuguese reds in UK supermarkets are wont to be right now.
Bigger, structured reds
Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon
A lovely expression of high-toned, fully fragrant and almost-sappy-juicy Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon: this vibrant red smells of ripe cherries and blackcurrants and has a sleek texture and freshness to spare. Impeccable fruit, winemaking – and value.
Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon
There’s a lot of wine for the money in this very swish Cabernet from Catena’s vineyards in Agrelo in Mendoza’s Luján de Cuyo: a deeply flavoured core of dark black cherry and blackcurrant with a creamy mid-palate and plenty of soft-grained tannic structure and Andean definition and freshness.
Chilean Carmenère
The Finest Puemo Carmenère has long been a favourite of the Tesco range, but this new addition from Concha y Toro shows the adopted Chilean signature grape in a deeper, more serious, structured mode, with the variety’s signature herbal and red bell pepper tones threading through abundant juicy blackcurrants and oak spice.
Argentinian Malbec
We’re not all that keen on the slightly kitsch (but undeniably distinctive) and, more importantly, heavyweight packaging of this new producer in the Tesco line-up, but we really like the wine: a fruit-driven style of Malbec with abundant tumbling red and black plum and mulberry fruitiness, suave tannin and just a touch of chocolatey oak.
Bordeaux second wine
The second wine of the perennially overperforming, unclassified Haut-Médoc Château Sociando-Mallet is designed for earlier drinking, with just 30% of the blend seeing oak (for 11 months). From a powerful vintage such as 2018, the drinking window appears open at 7 years old, with a harmonious, fresh feel to its cassis, plum and soft cigar-box tones.
Richer and oaked whites
Argentinian Chardonnay
Like its red Malbec sibling, caveats apply on the heavy packaging with its unsightly and unnecessary metal label, but this is another excellent wine from Tesco newcomers Antigal: a Chardonnay that sits in a very comfortable (and affordable) position between tropical and stone fruit ripeness and bright lemon citrussy freshness, with the palate given a little extra volume by six months in French oak.
Errazuriz Chardonnay
Errazuriz makes a lot of wine, but the quality level rarely dips, and the value is often remarkable – not least in this very deftly made Chardonnay which balances its luminous apple and peach with a flash of bright acidity and perfectly integrated wheatmealy oak.
Sparkling wines
Zuccardi Pét-Nat
Tesco’s range can be quite funky in places, with orange wines, Greek wines, and, in this case, the trendy sparkling category of Pét-Nat all getting a space. This is a great introduction to this new-old style of fizz from the relentlessly creative Zuccardi: an explosively fresh and zesty, dry style that is alive with bright pear and pithy citrus fun.
English Sparkling Chardonnay
This impeccable 100% Chardonnay Kentish fizz builds a delightful mix of rich key-lime pie or lemon meringue, patisserie and ripe fruit flavours around an intricate framework of classically English nerves-of-steel acidity and a delicate mousse. Classy.
South African Sparkling
A new Tesco addition from an old South African sparkling hand, this 52% Pinot Noir / 48% Chardonnay is as ever expertly done, with 15 to 18 months’ lees aging bringing a toasty heft to the refreshing strawberry cordial fruit and the bright, pithy lemony finish.
Sicilian Sparkling
A Sicilian take on a variety better associated with the more northerly corners of the Italian Med, this is a great little buy for the Christmas party season: easy-going peach-and-pear palate lifted by zesty acidity and subtle floral nose.

Simpsons, White Cliffs Blanc de Blancs, Kent, England, United Kingdom, 2019

90
Sourced from the chalk soils in the North Downs of Kent, the latest vintage release of Simpson's White Cliffs Blanc de Blancs presents a more mineral, linear expression compared to the 2018 vintage. Aged for 36 months on lees, it showcases toasty lemon sorbet on the nose and palate, with plenty of lime zest, kiwi, and crunchy green apple peel, leading to a cleansing, precise finish.
