Scroll down for the judge’s top high altitude Malbecs

Malbec fruit grown in Argentina at between 1,100 and 1,700 metres has a taste profile that is very different to what is achieved in lower-lying areas. Cooler nights improve acidity levels, while the flavours and textures become more vivid and refined.

Decanter Man of the Year 2009 Nicolas Catena was one of the first to plant in the heights of Gualtallary, about 1,500 metres above sea level back in 1996. “We planted at higher altitudes because we wanted an elegance that wasn’t easy to achieve on the valley floor”.

All three judges agreed that the wines tasted showed a high level of quality, consistency and stylistic diversity. The Uco Valley is arguably producing Argentina’s finest Malbecs, and its sub-zones are starting to be defined and understood more clearly by producers and consumers.

“Defined sub-regional styles are still a work in progress in the Uco Valley but the momentum is there, along with Malbecs whose fresh fruit is not dulled by excess oak”

Bodega Teho, Tomal Malbec, Uco Valley, La Consulta, Mendoza, Argentina, 2014

Led by Alejandro Sejanovich, one of the most respected winemakers and viticulturists in Argentina, Teho is a small bodega producing about 30,000 bottles a year, all elegant, refreshing wines. Its portfolio is mainly based on two vineyards – Zaha in Altamira and Tomal in La Consulta. From the latter, planted about 75 years ago, comes this 2014 Malbec, an excellent example of Sejanovich’s restrained style, with La Consulta showing all its purity and ripeness.

Phil Crozier: Packed full of dark fruits, succulent blueberries and delicate violet notes. This is wonderfully ripe with an opulent juiciness on the finish. Simply lovely!

Patricio Tapia: Some intense blueberry aromas here, with a soft, round palate that is friendly in texture and long in flavour. Full of such alluring perfume, this is a grand example of how elegant La Consulta can be.

Dirceu Vianna Jr: Pure, well-defined and inviting aromas of blueberries, dark cherries and floral overtones. Juicy and harmonious palate with a refined, smooth finish.

An utter delight! White pepper and smoky graphite on the nose along with bonfire, forest fruits, dried herbs and lavender which also come through onto the palate. A lovely earthy character with an inner electricity shining all the way through.

Purity of fruit is a certainty here, with seductive and graceful notes of blackberries, violets, chocolate, sweet spices and a peppery twang. This is complimented by beautiful savoury notes, some smoky bonfire and coffee. A soft texture made of tamed tannins and a long herbaceous finish.

Blackberries, cherries and spices dominate the nose and the palate has great depth. Fresh, tense and electric, this is a fine expression of the chalky soils of Gualtallary, a fresher approach to the grape. Graceful, pure and super bright.

Fragrant and attractive driven by floral notes as well as ripe juicy red fruits and a touch of liquorice. There is a great energy to the tannins and acidity which gives grip and refreshes everything. Sophisticated and silky, a wine for the cellar.

Notes of sour red cherry and leather on the noes on the nose and alluring flavours of violets, chocolate and peppercorns, this is an honest and clear example of Uco Valley Malbec. Smart wine, best to enjoy now.

Uplifting and inviting aromas of dark cherries and black pepper; these flow into juicy black fruits in the mouth twinned with a complex graphite and stony edge. This is all underpinned by a grippy finish and beautiful freshness.

Youthful and well defined, displaying aromas of blackberries and violets along with bright and fresh strawberry flavours with a hint of spice. The tannins are soft and round without being boring or flat, as they have good grip for a meaty dish.
