This is an austere wine that takes its time to open up into a complex aromatic profile of dried flowers, currants, gunpowder, blackcurrant, truffles, graphite, and a hint of tar. Broad, voluminous, and unctuous but balanced out by fine, elegant tannins, the flavours linger at length. The Caro 2007 is something of a revelation. Crafted by Catena Zapata and DBR Lafite out of 60% Malbec and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Mendoza before ageing in 80% new barrels for 18 months. Still has good ageing potential.
