The indigenous Areni Noir grapes grow on a single site at 1,600 metres above sea level and are over 100 years old. Each small vineyard parcel encompasses a unique combination of the varying strains of the Arena variety, which have survived and evolved through the ages. 'We only go there twice a year because it is so difficult to reach,' owner Zorik Gharibian says. The wine ferments in concrete and then ages for two years in amphorae, followed by a short period in large oak casks to soften the tannins. It has a complex nose of blackberry, sweet spice, roses, black pepper and wild mint. Ripe, silky and tight tannins and a velvety texture are matched by vibrant, pure and intense flavours and a long finish.
