Sparkling red wine isn’t an Australian proposition, but sparkling red wines that involve bold and tannic grapes are. It’s not every day you see a sparkling Durif (aka Petite Sirah) on offer, and this is a pleasant surprise. Deep black fruits with a hint of meatiness, plus clove and Moroccan spice waft out of the glass, which continue on the fresh palate, supported by loose, sandpapery tannins. Bright red fruits with an undertone of chocolate and charcuterie are a nice foil for the effervesce and spritely mousse. A dark slatey note drives through the fruit, alongside an acid line that doesn’t steal the show. A fun change from the usual sparkling Shiraz.
