Mark Bulman was the first person ever to win the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for a Grenache, as winemaker for Turkey Flat. So it's perhaps no surprise that the inaugural releases under his own label are an impressive showcase for the variety. One of two wines made in the same way, avoiding oxygen throughout the entire process and with ageing in sandstone amphora, Gary's Vineyard is made from vines planted in 2007 in ironstone, gravel and clay soils of Blewitt Springs. Named after grower Gary Whaite, it's a detailed and dancing wine, with Negroni-like herbal and dried orange peel aromatics, leading to an intricate palate of crystalline red fruit with fine, Nebbiolo-like tannins. A remarkable debut.
