David Franz's mission to 'capture "Burgophile" sensibilities from old vine Barossa Grenache' has surely been accomplished. Fragile and delicate in appearance, this packs impressive intensity and concentration of fruit. There's a range of red berry aromas and sweet spices on the nose. Incredibly bright acidity combines with a tight tannic structure on the palate to give a wine with serious pedigree and ageworthy ability. In terms of typicity this most certainly goes against the grain of what you'd expect from Grenache, let alone an example from a warm climate like Barossa. For that reason it is hard not to be impressed by this very well executed fresh take on the variety.
