The focused effort of Nick Radford to best read his complex Marananga vineyard is paying handsome reward. The Block 5 component of sandy loam over clay brings extremely dark fruit that shows concentrated blackberry over black plum, but its strident power is pulled into balance by pliable tannins and a keen acid seam. A portion of whole berries in the ferments amplify purple fruit and violet aromas, but there’s also mocha and liquorice dialling up some pleasing exotic notes.
