Taras Ochota has sourced Grenache throughout the lifespan of Ochota Barrels from the same Onkaparinga Ridge vineyard within the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. But this first offering is barely recognisable as a sibling of the lean, taut wines of later vintages. In this especially dry year, the fruit was very ripe – showing chubby plum fruit over liquorice on a satisfying medium-bodied palate. Taras had been working at Two Hands winery in the Barossa, building hefty Shiraz that filled a gigantic framework, but this lean style of Grenache shows his focus for Ochota Barrels was shifting to pursue a very different vinous journey.
