Wines from ancient vines don't need to be weighed down by history. Winemaker Craig Stansborough treats his prime fruit with enthusiasm and encourages its lively expression, rather than pious reverence – and the wine is a joy in the glass because of this. Coming from the Zimmerman family’s Woodland vineyard, planted near Lyndoch in 1880, this Shiraz is deceptively vivacious and sprightly, showing energetic plum, redcurrant, red earth and spice that is easily carried along the supple palate line. Rather than asserting unnecessary heaviness, the old-vine fruit serves as a reliable superstructure to support the persistence of bright, energetic flavours.
