Small, thick-skinned berries with a very high seed content from Alfred Percy Birks’ original 1893 vines define this singular, savoury Shiraz. Under screwcap, fruit expression seems more buoyant, showing blackberry with a touch of jube, pronounced bay leaf, liquorice and expansive, attractively mulchy and silty tannins which build in the mouth. This is exceptionally long, with a firm undertow of acidity and traces of iodine and angostura bitters. Superbly balanced, with a strong centre of gravity.
